I read this book in one afternoon. The blending of religion, church abuse, addiction, science/reason, and distant/aloof parents really called to something deep inside me. And yet, it is very separate from me in the race and connection to her immigrant parents for me.
Alike and different.
This sophomore release by the author hits its mark. She has a strong storytelling voice that makes the reader want to know what happens and what the outcomes are. The conflicting narrative for the main character in both her 11 year old mind and her 28 year old mind is beautifully done. Her core story remains the same even as she gains confidence and separation from her childhood home. It reminds me that we can get far away and be so very near at the same time.
