Change – Step 2

Mindset

Change is an inevitable part of life, and can be both exciting and daunting. Last week, I talked about the role of acceptance in navigating change. This week, I want to talk about the way our mindset impacts our approach to change.

Mindset is the lens through which we view the world, and it shapes the attitudes we have about the world around us. When we are experiencing change, a growth mindset can help us navigate challenges more effectively. Growth mindset is our belief that we can learn and grow from new experiences.

People who don’t have a growth mindset, typically have a more fixed mindset. Fixed mindset is the belief that our abilities and traits cannot be changed and that we are stuck with what we were given at birth. Approaching change with a fixed mindset will make us more afraid to try new things and tend to give up when things get difficult.

Here are a few tips and tricks to improving your mindset when dealing with change:

  • Embrace growth mindset: See change as an opportunity to learn and grow, and challenges as a natural part of life. Embrace the idea that you can improve and adapt to new situations.
  • Focus on positive things: Change can be scary, but it can also be exciting. Try to focus on the positives and look for opportunities to learn and grow. Consider what new skills or experiences change might bring.
  • Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself during change. Remember that it’s okay to make mistakes and take time to care for yourself.
  • Baby steps: Break the change down into smaller steps. This can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and make progress towards your goals.
