Change – Step 4

Support

I’m currently watching the house on the other side of the street get a massive facelift. As they work on it, I keep thinking “It looks like a new house!” The longer I stare (with a cup of tea from my front porch) the more I realize that it isn’t just a facelift. They are making some key structural changes. And to do that they have extensive scaffolding around the front of the house.

What does this have to do with change?

Well…support (aka scaffolding) is the last step to our embracing change and leaning into transformation. After we’ve accepted that change happens, activated our Growth Mindset, and offered ourselves some self-compassion, we really need to figure out who is on our team. Who will help us as we navigate change and find a new normal.

Your team…your support system…your scaffolding should provide encouragement, guidance, and a sense of security, enabling you to embrace change with confidence. The people on your team can be friends and family (hopefully!), but can also include colleagues, a therapist, and a coach. This group of trusted humans can empower you during times of transition.

  1. Emotional Support:
Having people who believe in you and genuinely care about your well-being is a tremendous source of emotional support. These folks lend a listening ear, offer words of encouragement, and provide a safe space for you to express your fears and doubts. A handful of people who love you just as you are and provide unwavering support can help you navigate the emotional roller coaster that often accompanies significant life changes.
  2. Practical Guidance:
Change comes with new challenges, unfamiliar territory, and a need for practical guidance. Your team should offer insight, advice, and knowledge based on their own experiences. They can help you explore your options, brainstorm your big ideas, and provide a fresh perspective when you feel stuck. Having access to their wisdom can save you time, effort, and potential mistakes, making your journey smoother and more successful.
  3. Accountability and Motivation:
Change is often daunting, and it’s easy to become demotivated. Your support crew can serve as your accountability partners, keeping you focused and motivated. These are people you will allow to hold you accountable to your goals, provide gentle reminders when you lose track, and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Having someone in your corner who believes in your abilities is what each of us needs with self-doubt creeps in…as it will.
  4. Diverse Perspectives:
Does your team only look and sound like you? Then recruit new members! A diverse support system helps you see new perspectives and ideas. They will challenge your assumptions and push you out of your little cosy box.
  5. Resilience and Empowerment:
Change involves facing uncertainty. Your scaffolding helps you build resilience and makes you brave enough to take risks. These folks see your strengths and don’t mind reminding you. their belief in you helps you find the confidence needed to embrace change and overcome any obstacles that may arise.

As a coach, one of the things I bring to the table is a fresh perspective and some objectivity. I will see the best version of you and try to draw that person out so that you can make whatever changes you seek! If you’d like to talk about how I can support you, book some time with me here.
